WHAT CAUSES DIFFERENT RESULTS FOR CLIENTS WHEN CHOOSING THE SAME TECHNIQUE?

Microscopic skin texture (dry, oily, wrinkled, smooth, dehydrated, etc.) can produce different results even when the same technique is used. Young skin is compact, elastic, even and has intense cellular activity, while mature skin has slower metabolic processes, is less elastic, more dehydrated, progressively thinner and tends to develop cooler undertones.

HOW LONG MY PERMANENT EYEBROWS WILL LAST?

The length of time a permanent makeup procedure lasts depends on the technique chosen and how deep the pigment is implanted into the skin. In addition, the type of pigment used by the PMU artist (organic vs. inorganic) can affect longevity. From a purely aesthetic point of view, longer-lasting procedures do not always mean better results. Healthy permanent makeup should gradually fade and become more natural over time, typically lasting about 10–24 months. Because of the aging process, permanent eyebrows may also change shape, so it is important that faded PMU can be adjusted — whether to correct drooping, refine the shape, lift the brows, or modify the pigment color.

WHAT MAKES THE COST OF PERMANENT MAKEUP VARY SO MUCH BETWEEN SHOPS?

Cost for permanent makeup cosmetics will depend on many factors. Here are a few: Training level — there will be a huge price difference if you get your permanent makeup done by a PMU artist, PMU master or PMU expert, which adds to the cost of procedures; Legal factors — legal permanent makeup facilities are registered with the state and have a permit to operate from the Louisiana Department of Health, and this license comes with annual fees and taxes to the state, which adds to the cost of procedures; Insurance — all legal PMU facilities and artists should have proper insurance to be allowed to perform permanent makeup cosmetics, which adds to the cost of procedures; Medical waste — all legal facilities that perform procedures which could result in bleeding are required to have a medical waste contract, which adds to the cost of procedures; Education — the education of the PMU technician plays a big role in the cost, and if the technician participates in annual continuing medical education conferences and stays current on the latest products and techniques to give clients the very best, this adds to the cost of procedures; Certifications — PMU procedures are performed slightly differently around the world, and if your PMU technician has travelled and received international training, this adds to the cost of procedures; Products — PMU shops that use only high-quality, latest innovative equipment and safe products such as pigments, machines, needles, anesthetics, etc., spend much more money on these products, which adds to the cost of procedures; Techniques — if your PMU technician stays current on the best and latest techniques and provides more individualized, customized procedures, this takes significantly more time and adds to the cost of procedures.

WHY ARE YOUR PERMANENT MAKEUP REPAIRS MORE EXPENSIVE?

Great question! As many of you already know, most permanent makeup shops do not perform PMU repairs. There is a huge difference between repairing an existing PMU procedure and removing an existing PMU procedure. Under Louisiana State Department of Health guidelines, all removals must be performed by a physician or under the direct supervision of an on-site physician. This includes removals by salt, acid, laser or surgical excision, and all of these fall outside the scope of a permanent makeup artist license. Tattoo removal by non-physicians in Louisiana is a violation of the criminal code, therefore PMU artists are limited to repairs only. Very few PMU artists perform repairs because they are very time-consuming and require multiple sessions, it is very difficult to fix someone else’s mistake or change an existing shape, different pigments often do not work well together, it is very difficult to lighten a dark or black brow without removal, and very difficult to repair inks that have faded into purple, red, blue, green, orange, pink or grey. Repairs also require extremely high training and artistic ability, and final results are often not perfect, which is the standard we strive for at Brow Design By Dina. Many PMU artists do not have enough experience with color theory, pigmentology, skin filters, undertones and facial anatomy to make these repairs successful. At Brow Design By Dina you can feel comfortable knowing that Dina’s knowledge, experience and confidence allow most repairs here to be successful; however, some brows cannot be repaired and must be removed by a physician. Bottom line — please do your homework before getting any permanent makeup procedure, as tattoo laser removal is very painful, very expensive and very time-consuming.

HOW DO YOU PICK THE RIGHT COLOR?

Color is one of the most controversial and hotly debated topics in permanent makeup. In order for a master to choose the right color for you, they must understand not only color theory but pigmentology as well — something that is often not fully taught in many US permanent makeup schools. Regardless of whether an artist knows how to create perfect hair strokes, choosing the correct pigment is half the battle. Many salons simply swab pigment on a client’s forehead to match current hair color, but this method ignores how the pigment will interact with skin undertones and skin filters, which often leads to the wrong color result. Nobody wants to leave a permanent makeup facility with brows that quickly turn red, grey or blue — yet this happens far too often. Many clients share fears that their brows or lips will not match their skin properly, often recalling cases where brows turned blue or dark grey after a short time. This can occur when the artist lacks full understanding of the Tyndall effect, chemical composition of pigments, color theory, pigmentology, skin undertones and filters, equipment, needle taper and configuration, or when poor technique places pigment too deep into the skin. As a permanent makeup expert and instructor with many years of experience, I have a clear understanding of every factor and never guess the outcome of my work — knowledge is our excellence.

WHY ARE ALL PERMANENT MAKEUP PROCEDURES A TWO STEP PROCESS?

Because of scabbing during the healing process, you will lose about 60% of the initial color. The pigment implanted into the epidermis and upper dermis is deposited inside skin cells, and a natural transformation process causes the color to appear lighter in tone. As the outer skin cells dry and shed, the color fades and additional pigment needs to be placed into the skin. This healing and regeneration process typically takes between 4 and 8 weeks, depending on age and skin condition. After this period, the technician can perform a follow-up session to perfect and complete the final result.

DOES MICROBLADING HAVE LIMITATIONS?

Microblading is not suitable for all clients or all skin types. This technique is generally recommended for young to middle-aged clients with normal skin. It is not suitable for clients with extremely oily skin or for mature clients with thin or sensitive skin. We also do not perform the Microblading technique on clients who are Fitzpatrick skin types 1, 5, or 6, as these skin types are more delicate and may carry a higher risk of complications.

What Is the Tyndall Effect in Permanent Makeup?

The Tyndall effect in permanent makeup occurs when pigment is implanted too deeply into the skin and appears blue instead of its original color. It is an optical phenomenon — light scattering and refraction within the skin cause the human eye to perceive the color differently, similar to why veins appear blue under the skin even though there is no blue pigment. How to prevent it? The conclusion is simple: the artist must work as superficially as possible so the brows do not turn blue, dark gray or purple during healing, even when brown pigments are used. I consciously choose modern superficial techniques and high-quality pigments because it is important that the color does not fade into unwanted shades over time. Requests such as “darker, deeper, denser, longer-lasting” often lead to blue eyebrows permanently. Modern surface techniques and careful two-step work are considered the global standard for this procedure, although this is not always evident in Louisiana judging by how many clients seek correction of previous work. If you want beautiful, natural-looking brows, carefully study the artist’s healed results and do thorough research before choosing your specialist.
